The Internet makes it easier than ever for students to plagiarize term papers, but this application aims to strike fear into the hearts of deceptive students by comparing a document with the Web to find excessive similarities. The user-friendly interface lets you quickly select files for examination, although the trial version only supports one document at a time. The program generates HTML reports, highlighting suspicious passages, and gives you a link to the Web source, so you can check for yourself. Plagiarism-Finder was fairly accurate with passages of seven or more words but didn’t work as well with smaller bits of text. Therefore, we feel the program does a good job of catching blatant cases of plagiarism, but can’t be called foolproof. Though it may not help finger the most savvy cheats, this app still can serve as a handy weapon for teachers and professors.
