This GIF-optimization utility wraps simple functionality in a good-looking package. Advanced GIF Optimizer’s well-organized interface presents a file tree on the left and a windowpane on the right, displaying GIFs eligible for optimization. You can test files individually or in bulk, to see how much space you’ll save. The program can then modify the files in place (with the originals optionally backed up to another folder) or save optimized GIFs in another folder. However, you can’t rename optimized files, nor save them side by side with the originals. The more serious problem is that Advanced GIF Optimizer often can’t shrink GIFs all. It lets you drop interlacing or reduce color depth, but even then, many GIFs won’t budge. As a result, Advanced GIF Optimizer will be useful mainly for those who want to cut costs on high-traffic, image-heavy Web sites by reducing bandwidth a fraction.
